Cab Signals FRA Requirements To all Electrician employees engaged in installing, testing, repairing and maintaining cab signal equipment. Cab Signals are installed for safety; it prevents one train from running into another, and detects improperly aligned switches, drawbridges, and broken rails. There are two classes of cab signal inspections: departure and periodic. Locomotives used in service will be given a periodic inspection every 45 days, 60 days for Harmon Ultra Cab II . No out-of-service time is recognized for this equipment. Periodic inspections (FRA 236.588): All periodic inspections of cab signal equipment will be every 45 days and when the locomotive is due: QM, SM, AI, EM, TI and 5I inspections, periodic inspection forms are to be made out and filed at the point of the inspection, where it may be accessible to F.R.A. representatives, your signature must be legible. Departure test (FRA 236.587): A departure test card will be made out in duplicate one copy will be filed at point of inspection where it may be accessible to F.R.A. representatives, your signature must be legible, the other copy is to be placed in the appropriate cardholder on the locomotive. Test Set: record the test set serial number used for calibration and record qualification/In-service date of the test set used for calibration on the inspection sheet form, (this calibration test set must be removed from service yearly for calibration). Hours of service: All employees engaged in installing, testing, repairing and maintaining cab signal equipment must maintain a record of covered service in hour of service book, your signature must be legible. Employees will be governed by the hours of service act as follows: Sec. 3A (a) It shall be unlawful for any common carrier, its officers or agents, subject to the act- 1. To require or permit an individual employed by the carrier who is engaged in installing, testing, repairing and maintaining signal systems, in case such individual shall have been continuously on duty for twelve hours, to continue on duty or to go on duty until he has had at least ten consecutive hours off duty; or2. To require or permit an individual described in paragraph (1) to continue on duty or to go on duty when he has not had at least eight consecutive hours off duty during the preceding twenty-four hours.Subject: National Health and Welfare Plan lowering of co-pays for certain office visits
